2025 · GS Paper 1 · Q10 · 10 marks

Do you think that globalization results in only an aggressive consumer culture ? Justify your answer.

In short

Globalisation has fed an aggressive, debt-fuelled consumer culture in India, but it has also brought jobs, liberal rights, glocal adaptation and global reach for Indian culture, so consumerism is not its only result. India received about $129 billion in remittances in 2024, the world's highest.

Introduction
Since 1991, global brands, media and credit have reshaped Indian spending, and George Ritzer's "McDonaldization" warns of a consumption-driven world. Yet globalisation also carries jobs, ideas, rights and culture, so its outcome must be judged on more than shopping malls.
The Consumerist Face of Globalisation
•

Debt-fuelled spending

Easy credit, buy-now-pay-later apps and online festival sales push spending ahead of income; RBI data showed household net financial savings at about 5.3% of GDP in 2022-23.

•

Conspicuous consumption

Veblen's display for status shows in lavish weddings and commercialised festivals like Dhanteras.

•

Ecological and cultural cost

Fast fashion and short-lived gadgets made India the third-largest e-waste generator (Global E-waste Monitor 2020), and uniform malls erode local crafts and cuisines.

Beyond Consumerism: Wider Social Outcomes
•

Jobs and mobility

The IT-BPM sector employs over 50 lakh people (NASSCOM), and India received about $129 billion in remittances in 2024 (World Bank), the world's highest, enabling family mobility and women's urban work.

•

Rights and liberal values

Global ideas of equality fed #MeToo (2018), and Navtej Singh Johar (2018) drew on international human rights law.

•

Glocalisation and soft power

McDonald's McAloo Tikki shows adaptation, not takeover, and yoga's UN-recognised International Day (2015) carries Indian culture abroad.

Conclusion
I do not agree that globalisation results only in an aggressive consumer culture: it has fed materialism, but also jobs, rights and cultural confidence. Mindful consumption, in line with SDG 12 and Gandhi's need over greed, can keep the gains without the excess.
