2013 · GS Paper 3 · Q11 · 10 marks
Write a note on India's green energy corridor to alleviate the problem of conventional energy.
In short
The Green Energy Corridor is India's dedicated transmission network that carries renewable power from resource-rich states into the national grid so that solar and wind can displace coal. Phase I (2015) added about 9,700 circuit km in eight states, and Phase II (2022) targets about 20 GW.

Ghissu Editorial · Verified 4 Oct 2026 · 271 words
Phase I (2015)
About 9,700 circuit km of intra-state lines in eight renewable-rich states such as Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, funded by central grant, state share and a KfW (Germany) soft loan.
Inter-state and Phase II
POWERGRID's inter-state links move surplus power across regions, and Phase II (2022) adds about 10,750 circuit km in seven states to evacuate about 20 GW.
Forecasting and Ladakh
Renewable Energy Management Centres forecast variable output, and the Ladakh corridor (2023) will bring 13 GW to Haryana.
Lower coal dependence
Ending curtailment of stranded solar and wind lets clean units displace coal plants, which still generate most electricity.
Energy security and climate
Domestic renewables cut fuel imports and support 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030 and net zero by 2070.
Bottlenecks
Right-of-way disputes and the Supreme Court's 2021 Great Indian Bustard order on overhead lines in Rajasthan have slowed work, and storage must keep pace.
