2016 · GS Paper 1 · Q13 · 12 marks

Discuss the concept of air mass and explain its role in macro-climatic changes.

In short

An air mass is a large body of air with uniform temperature and humidity acquired over a source region, and its movement and collisions drive fronts, cyclones, seasons and extremes. Polar and tropical air meeting along the polar front create the temperate cyclones that bring Western Disturbances to India.

Introduction
An air mass is a vast body of air with nearly uniform temperature and humidity, acquired by resting over a uniform source surface. Its movement and collisions carry one region's climate into another.
Concept and Classification of Air Masses
•

Source regions

Air masses form under calm anticyclonic conditions over uniform surfaces such as Siberia, northern Canada, the Sahara and the tropical oceans.

•

Bergeron classification

They are named by moisture, continental (c) or maritime (m), and by latitude, Arctic, Polar, Tropical or Equatorial, so cP over Siberia is cold and dry while mT over the Gulf of Mexico is warm and humid.

•

Modification in transit

Cold air over a warm sea turns unstable and showery, while warm air over cold land turns stable and foggy.

Role of Air Masses in Macro-Climatic Changes
•

Fronts and cyclones

Polar and tropical air meeting along the polar front breed temperate cyclones that give north-west Europe year-round rain and India its winter Western Disturbances.

•

Seasonal regimes

The Indian monsoon is a seasonal swap of humid oceanic air in summer and dry Central Asian air in winter, with the Himalayas blocking Siberian cold.

•

Extremes

Arctic air outbreaks caused the 2021 Texas freeze, while hot continental air drives north India's loo.

•

Shifting boundaries

Warming is expected to push air-mass boundaries and storm tracks poleward, changing rainfall patterns.

Conclusion
Air masses carry the climate of their source regions, and their meeting and retreat explain the seasons, fronts and extremes of world climates, which makes tracking them central to forecasting and resilience.
