2021 · GS Paper 4 · Q3(a) · 10 marks

what do each of the following quotations mean to you? "Every work has got to pass through hundreds of difficulties before succeeding. Those that persevere will see the light, sooner or later." — Swami Vivekananda

In short

The quote means that every worthwhile task meets repeated difficulties, and steady, adaptive perseverance rather than luck finally brings success. ISRO's recovery from the 2019 Vikram crash to Chandrayaan-3's landing near the lunar south pole in August 2023 shows this.

Introduction
Vivekananda lived these words: a monk with no credentials, he reached Chicago through months of hardship to address the Parliament of Religions in 1893. To me the quote says difficulty is the normal path of worthwhile work, and persistence, not luck, brings the light.
What the Quote Means to Me
•

Hurdles are inevitable

Expecting resistance in advance turns a setback into a test of resolve rather than a reason to quit.

•

Detachment sustains effort

The Gita's Nishkama Karma, a right to the action and not to its fruit, keeps one working through delay.

•

Not mere stubbornness

True perseverance learns from each failure and adapts the method while holding the goal.

Perseverance in the Present Context
•

Science and nation

After the Vikram lander crashed in 2019, ISRO learnt from the failure and Chandrayaan-3 landed near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023.

•

Administration

IAS officer Armstrong Pame built the 100-km "People's Road" in Tamenglong, Manipur, in 2012 with public contributions when official funds were unavailable.

•

Public health

Repeated pulse polio rounds, despite hesitancy and hard-to-reach families, ended in WHO certifying India polio-free in 2014.

•

Individual life

Dashrath Manjhi cut a path through a hill in Gaya over about 22 years so his village could reach the hospital.

Conclusion
Perseverance bridges a noble intention and its outcome. A civil servant who persists with integrity through delays and pressure is the one who finally delivers service to the last citizen, and that is the light Vivekananda promised.
