The troposphere is a very significant atmospheric layer that determines weather processes. How?

In short

The troposphere determines weather because it holds nearly all the atmosphere's water vapour, is heated from below so it cools with height and overturns, and is capped by the tropopause. This drives convection, winds, fronts, cyclones and winter inversions.

Model answer

Introduction
The troposphere, the lowest atmospheric layer, is about 8 km thick over the poles and 18 km over the equator, yet it holds roughly three-quarters of the atmosphere's mass and nearly all its water vapour. Heated from below and capped above, it is where weather is made.
Properties That Make the Troposphere the Weather Layer
•

Mass and moisture

Nearly all water vapour and aerosols lie here, supplying moisture and condensation nuclei for clouds.

•

Heated from below

Warmed by terrestrial radiation, it cools with height at about 6.5°C per km, keeping air prone to overturning.

•

Tropopause lid

Where temperature stops falling, rising air halts, thunderclouds flatten into anvils and jet streams flow just beneath.

Weather Processes It Generates
•

Convection and rainfall

Rising air builds cumulonimbus clouds, the Kalbaisakhi storms of Bengal and the monsoon trough's deep convection.

•

Pressure and winds

Unequal heating drives planetary and local winds, and the subtropical westerly and tropical easterly jets steer India's monsoon.

•

Storms and inversions

Fronts form western disturbances, warm seas feed cyclones like Fani (2019), and winter inversions trap the Indo-Gangetic fog and smog.

Way Forward
•

Better observation

Mission Mausam (2024) and the INSAT-3DS satellite can sharpen nowcasts.

•

Adapt to warming

A warmer troposphere holds about 7% more moisture per °C, so cities need drainage and heat plans.

Conclusion
Holding moisture, cooling with height and sitting under the tropopause lid, the troposphere turns solar heat into weather, making it the base of forecasting and climate resilience.
