Introduction
Mahavir, the 24th Jain Tirthankara, preached in Prakrit some 2,500 years ago, and India granted that language classical status in 2024. His teachings show how to pursue wants, beliefs and power without violence to people or nature.
Major Teachings of Mahavir
•

Ahimsa

Mahavir saw a soul (jiva) in every living being, down to plants and water, so non-violence covered act, speech and even intention.

•

Anekantavada

Reality has many aspects and every view captures only a part, so Syadvada holds each claim true only "in some respect".

•

Aparigraha and equality

Non-possession limits wants to needs, liberation comes by one's own effort rather than ritual, and Mahavir admitted every varna and women into his sangha.

Relevance in the Contemporary World
•

Ecology

Aparigraha anticipates Mission LiFE, launched in October 2022 against mindless consumption, and the idea of intergenerational equity.

•

Pluralism

Anekantavada counsels hearing every side before judging in a polarised age, sustaining the harmony Article 51A(e) asks of citizens and the openness public consultation demands of officials.

•

Compassion for all life

Ahimsa echoes Article 51A(g) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and it shaped Gandhi through the Jain thinker Shrimad Rajchandra.

•

Probity

Satya and Asteya mean refusing bribes and declaring every conflict of interest, while restraint curbs the greed behind corruption.

Conclusion
Mahavir's ethic of non-violence, many-sidedness and non-possession is a working code for a violent, polarised and over-consuming world. For a civil servant it means power used with restraint and judgment formed after hearing all sides, the essence of constitutional morality.
