Differentiate between the following: Law and Ethics
In short
Law is codified, State-enforced and sets the minimum standard of conduct, while ethics flows from conscience and society, is enforced by guilt and censure, and demands more. They overlap and shape each other, as the Vishaka guidelines (1997) became the POSH Act 2013.

Source and form
Law comes from a sovereign authority, as the Income-tax Act 1961 or the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023; ethics grows from family, faith and philosophy, such as Gandhi's Satya.
Sanction
A legal breach invites fines or prison; an ethical lapse is checked mainly by guilt and social censure.
Floor versus ceiling
Ignoring a road-accident victim is no crime but fails ethics, which is why Section 134A of the Motor Vehicles Act (2019) now protects Good Samaritans.
Conduct versus character
Law regulates outward conduct, while ethics also judges motive and character, so tax avoidance through a loophole may be lawful yet wrong.
Ethics becomes law
The Vishaka guidelines (1997) on workplace harassment became the POSH Act 2013.
Law can lag ethics
Section 377 IPC was lawful but unjust until Navtej Singh Johar (2018), and the Salt Satyagraha (1930) broke an unjust law on moral grounds.
Legality is not enough
"No rule was broken" is Ethical Minimalism, legality substituting for morality, which the Nolan Principles (1995) reject.
