Introduction
The American Declaration of Independence (1776) and France's Declaration of the Rights of Man (1789) replaced the divine right of kings with popular sovereignty. Together they laid the political, legal and social foundations of the modern world.
Political Foundations: Sovereignty, Constitutions and Nations
•

Popular sovereignty

Authority came to rest on the consent of the governed, as Locke and Rousseau argued, not on heredity.

•

Written constitutions

The US Constitution of 1787 gave the world federalism and the separation of powers, and France abolished its monarchy in 1792.

•

Modern nationalism

The French levée en masse of 1793 made loyalty to the nation, not the dynasty, the basis of the state.

Social and Legal Foundations: Rights, Equality and Secular Law
•

Rights as a charter

The Rights of Man (1789) and the US Bill of Rights (1791) are ancestors of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948).

•

End of feudal privilege

The decrees of 4 August 1789 abolished feudal dues and established equality before the law.

•

Uniform law and liberation

The Napoleonic Code (1804) spread civil law across Europe, while Haiti, Latin America and later India borrowed the language of 1776 and 1789.

•

Rights need institutions

The Terror of 1793-94 shows liberty needs checks and balances.

•

Widen the circle

Olympe de Gouges (1791) and American slavery, ended only in 1865, show the promise must keep expanding.

Conclusion
The two revolutions turned subjects into citizens and gave the modern world its vocabulary of rights, constitutions and nations, a promise that India's Preamble of liberty, equality and fraternity still carries forward.
