2025 · GS Paper 1 · Q13 · 15 marks

The French Revolution has enduring relevance to the contemporary world. Explain.

In short

The French Revolution remains relevant because its ideals of liberty, equality, fraternity, human rights and popular sovereignty still shape constitutions, while the Terror warns against extremes. The Declaration of the Rights of Man (1789) prefigured the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and India's Preamble.

Introduction
More than two centuries on, the Revolution of 1789 still frames how the world argues about rights, power and equality. Its ideas live in constitutions, while its excesses remain a warning.
Ideas of 1789 That Still Shape Democracies
•

Liberty, equality, fraternity

The slogan of 1789 is France's motto and echoes in India's Preamble, though Ambedkar traced his triad to the Buddha.

•

Human rights

The Rights of Man (1789) proclaimed equality before law and the presumption of innocence; René Cassin of France helped draft the UDHR (1948).

•

Popular sovereignty

The Convention of 1792, elected by universal male suffrage, foreshadowed the universal adult franchise India adopted in 1950.

•

Political vocabulary

The left-right spectrum began in the Assembly of 1789, and the Napoleonic Code (1804) still shapes civil law.

•

Inspiration for the excluded

Jotirao Phule used Thomas Paine's Rights of Man to attack caste privilege.

•

Warning against extremes

The Terror of 1793-94 and Napoleon's coup of 1799 show how a revolution for liberty can end in purges and a strongman.

Way Forward
•

Constitutional methods

Ambedkar's 1949 warning against the "grammar of anarchy" urges change through constitutional means.

•

Widen the circle

Olympe de Gouges's Rights of Woman (1791) shows rights must keep reaching those left out.

Conclusion
The Revolution endures because its questions about power, equality and liberty remain open. Its ideals live in the UDHR and India's Preamble, while the Terror warns that rights last only with constitutional morality and fraternity.
